A 29-year-old Adair County man is facing a number of charges, including three felony counts, after threatening to kill a Columbia Police Department officer.
Jason Veach, of Bramlett Street, Columbia was arrested Sunday night on KY 80 West near the Gradyville community after allegedly threatening to kill Columbia Police Department Sgt. Jason Cross.
Veach, who had to be Tasered by Deputy Sheriff Mike Burton before he could be taken into custody, was charged with wanton endangerment first degree, terroristiuc threatening first degree, carrying a concealed deadly weapon by a convicted felon, terroristic threatening third degree, DUI second offense, driving on a DUI suspended license second offense, and no motorcycle license.
According to Deputy Burton, the events unfolded in the following manner.
Veach, who was riding a motorcyle, went to a residence on Owen Kemp Road around 10:15 p.m. Sunday and knocked on the door and said he needed some gas for his cycle.
The man told Veach he didn't have any gas, but would go next door to see if his neighbor, Sgt. Cross, had any. Veach, who was carrying a shotgun strapped under a jacket, told the man that if he went and got Cross, that he would kill Cross. He then pointed the gun at the man and told him he would shoot him.
When Veach left and went across the road to the Star Furniture parking lot where he had left the motorcycle, the neighbor called 911 and then went and alerted Cross about the situation.
Deputy Burton said that when he arrived on the scene, Veach was in the furniture store parking lot. Staying in his car, Burton said that he turned on his PA system and ordered Veach to drop his weapon and get down on he ground.
Veach eventually laid the shotgun on the ground, but refused to get down on the ground. He continued walking toward Burton, refusing several commands, and Burton used his Taser, hitting Veach and knocking him to the blacktop in the roadway.
Deputy Burton then handcuffed Veach, and called for the Adair County EMS to respond.
Veach was taken to Westlake Regional Hospital, where he was checked out, then lodged in the Adair County Regional Jail.
At an arraignment in Adair District Court Monday, Judge Michael Loy set Veach's bond at $100,000 cash. He his scheduled to appear in District Court for a preliminary hearing next Monday, Oct. 13.
