Indians Open with Win, Three Losses on Road
After opening the season with a home opener win, the baseball Indians dropped three games on the road to move to 1-3 after their opening week. ACHS 10 Wayne Co. 3 The Indians opened up the 2008 campaign in fine fashion as they followed a fine pitching performance from Derek Cape combined with timely hitting to win over Wayne Co. After giving up a first inning run to the Cardinals, the Indians responded in the bottom of the inning with five runs of their own. Christian Talley began the rally as he led off the game reaching first on a Wayne Co. error, and was quickly joined on base by Derek Cape (hit by pitch) and Jordan Knifley (walk). After Tyler Knight lifted a fly ball to right field, Talley was able to come home on a misplaced throw to the plate. Seth Dunbar then plated the second run of the inning laying down a two-strike bunt single to send home Clay Turner (pinch running for Cape) to move the Indians on top for good. However, the rally was far from complete as Even Curry stepped to the plate and ripped an RBI single to send Knifley to the plate, before Joseph Grider plated Dunbar and Curry with a two RBI single to complete the big inning. After holding the Cards scoreless, the Tribe took complete control of the game scoring three runs in their next two at bats. In the second, Derek Cape was sent home on Dunbar’s second RBI hit of the game; while Talley laced an RBI double in the third inning sending home Grider who had reached base on a walk. Talley went on to score later in the inning on a wild pitch. Wayne Co. was able to close the gap somewhat in the fifth inning as they plated two runs, but those were quickly trumped by as Talley got the runs back in the bottom of the frame with a two run homer over the left field wall sending home Grider, who had singled earlier in the inning. Talley, Dunbar, Grider, and Curry collected two hits each for the Tribe in the win as Cape threw a complete game fanning 10 batters and scattering 8 hits for the win. ACHS 2 Cumberland Co. 7 The Indians dropped their first road game of the year as they fell at the hands of Cumberland Co., who is coached by ACHS alum Andrew Reliford. The Panthers took control in their first at bat as they plated six runs, of which five were unearned to take a 6-0 lead. After adding an insurance run in the third, the Panthers held the Tribe to single runs in the fourth and seventh innings in getting the win. Christian Talley continued to carry the hot stick for the Indians with two hits and an RBI, while Seth Dunbar also had a hit and RBI in the loss. Jailyn Bailey pitched a nice game despite getting the loss, giving up only one earned run in six innings of work. He fanned four batters, while surrendering only seven hits. ACHS 0 Hart Co. 2 The Indians bats must have been left at home as they fell to Hart Co. on the road last Friday. They could only manage three hits and only advanced two runners past second base the entire game as Jared Denton’s varsity debut was spoiled after pitching six innings allowing only one earned run. Christian Talley, Even Curry, and Jordan Knifley collected hits in the loss. ACHS 1 Russell Co. 10 The Indians fell at the hands of rival Russell Co. on Saturday at Laker Field as the Tribe bats were once again held nearly silent collecting only two hits (both coming in their final at bat) in the loss. The Indians were able to take an early lead, as they plated a run in the top of the first on walks by Derek Cape, Seth Dunbar, and Michael Johnson, with Cape scoring on a Laker error off the bat of Joseph Grider. However, that would be last time the Tribe would threaten runs until the seventh inning, when Christian Talley and Cape collected Adair’s only two hits. Jordan Knifley took the loss on the mound after throwing two scoreless innings before finding trouble in the third.
