A Hispanic male became the first drowning victim of the year on Green River Lake and alcohol may have played a role in his death.
According to Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources Public Relations Officer Mark Marraccini, at approximately 3:30 pm Jorge Rojas Ayala drowned at Site 1 just above the Green River Dam on Green River Lake last Saturday, and alcohol is suspected as being a contributing factor.
According to Marraccini, a witness at the scene, observed Ayala and another Hispanic male racing to a buoy and while on the way back to the shore Ayala came up for air, then went back under the water and never came back up.
Marraccini also stated that the person also witnessed Ayala and 3 other Hispanic males drinking alcohol before the accident occurred.
Crescesia Sanchez, Mario Gonzalez and Hermialio Terjo were arrested at the scene by the Taylor County Sheriff Department for public intoxication and lodged in the Taylor County Regional Jail.
Adair County resident Joshua Hingle was the last drowning victim on Green River Lake, which occurred in August of 2008 on the Casey Creek section of the lake.
