A violent thunderstorm accompanied by high winds that rolled through Adair County Tuesday afternoon did considerable damage to the southeastern section of the county.
According to Adair County Emergency Management Director Greg Thomas, the storm, which hit the county around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, did the most damage along Harvey's Ridge in the Chance community, along Crocus Creek in the Melson Ridge area and Joe Tom Grant Road off KY 900 near Melson Ridge.
"Spotters were out and some reported seeing rotation in some clouds, but we're not aware of a tornado touching down anywhere in the county," Thomas said. "It appears that the majority of the damages were caused by straight-line winds.
On Joe Tom Grant Road, a large tree was blown down on a residence owned by Tony and Marian Grant, resulting in damages to the log home, and a large tree also fell on a garage at the Dwayne and Susan Loy home. The Loys'residence also suffered some damage due to the wind, and several trees were also blown down around the home.
Several trees were blown down on the lower end of Melson Ridge Road, and downed trees and limbs also blocked the Dug Hill section of KY 704. However, the worst damages occurred along Chance Road.
"There were trees blown down everywhere along Chance Road," County Road Department foreman Jobe Darnell said yesterday morning. "We were able to get the road cleared enough for traffic to pass through Tuesday afternoon, but there's a tremendous amount of cleanup left to be done."
In addition to Chance Road and Melson Ridge Road being blocked by downed trees, Darnell said that the county road crew also had to clear trees from County Line Road and Acree Road in the Montpelier area, and Rooks-Denton Road, Gentry Mill Road and Clear Springs Road off KY 80 East in the Sano Area.
