2009 Adair County Fair Dates Announced
Summer will be here before we know it, and that means it will soon be time for the annual Adair County Fair and Horse Show. This year's fair will run from July 3 through July 11, according to fair board president Greg Thomas, and will feature some old favorite events as well as some exciting new ones. "Due to the Fourth of July falling on Saturday, we're starting off the fair on Friday, July 3rd, with our dairy cattle show in the morning and horse show that night," Thomas said. On Saturday the Fourth, there will be expanded family fun games and a corn hole tournament with a large fireworks display capping off the evening. "One change we're making this year is that we're eliminating the kids' games program that we normally have on Wednesday," Thomas explained. "But, we're going to incorporate most of these games into the Family Fun program, so kids can still come out and compete for prizes and money." The carnival will open on Monday night, July 6, and continue through Saturday night, July 11. The admission to the fair this year will be $10, with admission allowing anyone an unlimited amount of carnival rides. "There won't be a carnival matinee on Wednesday like we've had in the past, but we're having family night on Tuesday," Thomas said. "Admission that night will only be $8, and the carnival will open at 4 p.m. so children can come early and ride." The week's night-time activities will include demolition derbies for both small and large cars, a mud sling, KTPA truck pull, rodeo, Dancing with the Stars, and pageants for all ages, ranging from babies up through the Mrs. Adair County Fair contest. Dwayne Spaws will be returning to provide entertainment Monday through Thursday nights, and a wood carver will be back for Friday and Saturday nights. "A new thing that we've added this year that everyone is excited about is an Adair County Fair Idol contest," Thomas said. "It'll will be done similar to the American Idol contest, with contestants being voted off each night." (See accompanying story for details about the Fair Idol contest.) As it has for the past few years, this year's fair will conclude on Saturday night with the big car demolition derby and the give-aways. The Jaycees will again be selling chances on a total of $10,000, with the exact monetary payouts to be announced at a later date. "We're excited about this year's fair," Thomas said. "With the way the economy is, you never know how things will turn out, but we feel that we'll be offering the people of Adair County and the surrounding areas a lot of value for their dollars, and we'll have something for everyone."
