CUMBERLAND Co. INMATE’S ATTEMPT To Escape FOILED
A Cumberland County prisoner who attempted to escape from custody while being transported back to the Adair County Regional Jail last week had her effort fail, and is now facing more charges. According to the police report, the incident occurred at approximately 1:22 p.m. Wednesday six miles south of Columbia on KY 61. The inmate, 20-year-old Kelly Roop, of Salem, Virginia, was being transported back to the Adair County Regional Jail following an appearance in Cumberland District Court when she was able to free herself from handcuffs and attempted to escape by overtaking another inmate who was also being transported. The Cumberland County Transportation Officer called for assistance, and was able detain Roop until law enforcement officers arrived on the scene. Roop was then taken into custody without further incident. Roop was charged with attempted escape first degree, kidnapping, assault second degree and terroristic threatening. The Kentucky State Police are investigating the incident. According to an article in the Cumberland County News, Roop is a fugitive being sought in four different states. She was arrested on July 14 in Cumberland County by Deputy Sheriff Scot Daniels, on suspicion passing bad checks in Cumberland County using other names. After running a check on the vehicle Roop was operating, Deputy Daniels contacted the Salem, Virginia Sheriff’s Department and found out that there were active warrants on Roop from Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina. Deputy Daniels charged Roop with numerous violations, including being a fugitive from another state, theft of identity, receiving stolen property and trafficking in stolen identities.
