Columbia Fine Tuning City Park
The City of Columbia began fine-tuning the city park earlier this week in order to prepare the grounds for the season. Columbia City Road Manager Donnie Rowe along with the city road workers and a couple of inmates from the class-D facility began spreading top soil and making a few upgrades to the city park on Monday. According to Rowe one of the areas, which was in dire need of topsoil was the area surrounding the basketball courts. Rowe and his crew added several layers of dirt around the court to establish a level run-off to help prevent injuries from the sharp drop-off next to asphalt part of the court. In addition the basketball court also received new basketball goals. Rowe also stated that they added lime around the outside of the tennis courts and filled in some low areas to help eliminate standing water to help get rid of mosquitoes. Another area that received additional topsoil was along the path of the water line that was installed last yea for the swimming pool, which had settled and sunk over the winter. “A lot of kids use this park and the students from Lindsey come over an use the basketball court so we want to make it as safe as possible for all of the people who use the park,” said Rowe. The several truck loads of topsoil that was used for the park project was donated by Richard Lee Walker and was hauled by Danny Pyles at no charge to the city.
